Do you think starting a song from a common chord sequence is unoriginal?

I almost always start from a riff or at least an idea which I accidentally play on my guitar. I know a friend who writes his songs but starting with a chord sequence and singing over it sometimes he even pre-sets the tempo! I can't help but think he must be just recreating songs he's heard before with those chords.
