How to rid the smell of varnish?

I decorated a box with gold leaf and finished it off by applying 2 coats of art & hobby varnish. The box is meant as a gift to a friend of mine and the smell is quite unpleasant. I applied the varnish today and left it on the balcony to dry as the smell is unbearable in the house. Is there anything I can apply over the varnish to get rid of the smell or will the smell go away quickly?
