Is it possible to rekindle a childhood romance from years ago?

My childhood sweetheart added me on Facebook recently. He's told me that I'm still gorgeous, and that it's great to talk to me again. But he said we could only be friends because there are too many girls that want to date him as it is. The thing is, he does want to hang out, and he actually made plans to after this weekend. In a way, I want him back. Is there anything I can do to make this happen?
