Root c, a different method to remove pulp?

I've had several root cs due to severe tooth decay issues.. Most of those procedures involved using files which I thought was the only method. One tooth I was told had a curved root, so I was referred to a specialist. On that occasion files were not used, but instead a suction "thing" I believe.. My question is, what is this method of removing the pulp, versus using files, called? Also, is this a good method? All I remember is that it felt like nothing compared to the previous procedures, afterward at least - almost no pain.
