What would be Australia like (Past to Now) if the French colonised the country?

i think that if we were colonized by the french we would of gained our independence much later then if we were colonized by the British or i think it could of been possible that since the British were looking for a new land to replace their colonies they might have fought the French for control over the continent so there could of been a possibility for a war between the French and the British over the Australian continent
